Some of the Free/Discounted Tools
Your student email is one of the most underused assets you have. Companies offer deep discounts and fully free plans to students because they want to build habits early. Once you graduate and start earning, you keep paying. That is their bet.
Take advantage of it while you can. Here is everything worth claiming before you lose access.
Start Here
GitHub Student Developer Pack
This is the only application worth doing before anything else on this list. One verification unlocks over 100 tools completely free including cloud credits, developer tools, domain names, and more. Even if you are not a developer, several tools in the pack are useful for any student. Go to education.github.com and apply with your student email.
AI Tools
Perplexity Pro — student discount Perplexity is one of the best AI research tools available right now. The Pro version gives you access to more powerful models and more searches per day. The student discount makes it genuinely affordable.
Google Gemini — free via Google One Education If your university uses Google Workspace you likely already have access to Gemini at no cost. Check with your institution before paying for any AI subscription.
Notion — free Pro for students The full Pro version of Notion completely free. If you read our note taking post you already know why this matters. Go to notion.so/students and verify with your student email.
Grammarly EDU — free via university Check whether your university has a Grammarly EDU partnership before paying for Grammarly Premium. Many do and students never find out. Ask your library or IT department.
Canva — free Pro via Education The same Canva Pro we covered in our presentation tutorial, completely free for students. Go to canva.com/education to verify your student status.
Productivity
Microsoft 365 Education — free Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneDrive. Free for students at most universities. Go to microsoft.com/education and sign in with your university email.
Notion — free Pro for students Already mentioned above but worth repeating. This is one of the highest value free upgrades on this entire list.
Obsidian — free for students A powerful note taking tool that stores everything locally rather than in the cloud. Worth knowing about as an alternative to Notion if you prefer keeping your data offline.
Design
Figma — free Education plan The industry standard design tool used at virtually every tech company and agency. Free for students at figma.com/education. Even if you are not a designer, knowing Figma basics is a genuinely useful skill.
Autodesk — one year free AutoCAD, Maya, and the full Autodesk suite free for one year. Relevant for engineering, architecture, and design students specifically.
Learning
LinkedIn Learning — free via university Thousands of courses on everything from Excel to public speaking to data analysis. Many universities provide free access and most students never use it. Check your university library portal first before paying for any online course.
Coursera — financial aid available Most Coursera courses can be audited for free or accessed via financial aid. You do not need to pay full price for almost anything on the platform as a student.
Domains and Hosting
Namecheap — free domain and SSL via GitHub Pack If you want to build a personal portfolio website, your GitHub Student Pack gives you a free domain through Namecheap. No excuse not to have one.
Microsoft Azure — $100 credits Google Cloud — student credits AWS Educate — free labs and credits All three major cloud platforms offer free student credits. If you are learning cloud computing or building any kind of project, claim all three.
Deals Worth Knowing
Amazon Prime — 6 months free Free trial followed by a heavily discounted student rate. Worth it for the shipping alone if you order regularly.
Spotify — roughly 50% student discount Apple Music — student discount
YouTube Premium — student discount
All three offer significant student pricing. If you are paying full price for any of these you are overpaying.
UNiDAYS and Student Beans Two platforms that aggregate student discounts across thousands of brands. Download both apps and check them before buying anything.
Where to Start
Do these three things today and you will have unlocked the highest value items on this list in under thirty minutes.
One: Apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack at education.github.com.
Two: Check whether your university provides free Microsoft 365 and Grammarly EDU by searching your university email portal or asking your library.
Three: Verify your student status on Notion and Canva using your student email.
Everything else on this list is worth coming back to as you need it. But those three unlock more value per minute than anything else here.
